The next-generation Motorola SBV5121e voice-over-IP (VoIP) cable modem is based on Motorola’s proven cable modem experience. By using industry standard signaling protocols, the SBV5121e provides high-speed Internet access and up to two lines of primary line VoIP telephone service over cable’s broadband connection to the home.
The Motorola SURFboard SB5101 is a Fast Ethernet modem designed for the Windows operating system. It is capable of both Ethernet and USB connectivity, and it comes with front panel status indicator LEDs and an online diagnostics page. Setting up the SB5101 is fairly simple, especially if you have a recent operating system. Those with an older OS will have to do a tad bit more work.

Initial Setup
The first step involved in the setup of the SURFboard SB5101 is to hook a coaxial cable from your room's cable outlet to the coaxial port on the back of the modem, and then hand-tighten the connectors firmly in place. It is through this cord that Internet signals to and from your Internet service provider will pass. Next, you need to plug one end of the power cord into an electrical outlet and the other end into the +12VDC port on the Motorola SB5101.
USB Setup
To set up the Motorola SURFboard as a USB device, you need to connect one end of the included USB cable into the USB port on the back of the modem and the other end into a USB port on your computer. The next step entails inserting the included SURFboard Cable Modem CD-ROM in to your CD-ROM drive and then following the onscreen instructions to install the USB driver required for the connection to work.

TCP/IP Settings

You will need to configure TCP/IP settings, regardless of whether you intend to use the Motorola SB5101 as an Ethernet or USB device. This involves configuring your computer's TCP/IP settings so that they obtain an IP address and DNS server address automatically. Note that this step is only necessary for older operating systems like Windows 95, Windows 98 SE and Windows ME, as more recent Windows operating systems are programmed to automatically configure these settings.
Light Test
Once you finish connecting and setting up the Motorola SURFboard SB5101, press the reset button on the modem and watch for the following lights. The 'Power' LED light on the front of the Motorola SB5101 should flash for a few seconds and then turn solid green. Next, the 'Receive' LED will flash and turn solid green. This process should repeat with both the 'Send' and 'Online' LEDs. If any of the lights fail to turn green, dial 1-877-466-8646 for technical support.
